Abu Hazim narrates from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I have gifted myself to you." She remained standing for a long time, so a man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! If you have no need of her, marry her to me." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have anything to give her as a dowry?" He said: "Only this waist-wrapper of mine." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you give her the waist-wrapper, you will be left without a waist-wrapper; look for something." He said: "I have nothing at all." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Look for something, even an iron ring." Despite searching he found nothing, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know any of the Qur'an?" He said: "I know such-and-such surahs," and he named them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have married you to her for what you know of the Qur'an."

Abu Hazim narrates from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he narrated something of the meaning of Malik's (may Allah have mercy on him) hadith, and Malik's hadith is more complete. At its end it says: "Have you learned to recite anything of the Qur'an?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go, I have married you to this woman; you will teach her the Qur'an."
(b) In the narration of Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah: "Go, I have married you to this woman, so teach her the Qur'an."

Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) the like of the story of Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), except that it does not mention the waist-wrapper and the ring. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know any of the Qur'an?" He said: Surah al-Baqarah and the surah that follows it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stand up and teach her twenty verses, and she is your wife." In al-Razi's narration: "I have married you to this woman."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Decide about me as you see fit. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the man who had asked for her in marriage: "Have you learned to recite anything of the Qur'an?" He said: Surah al-Baqarah and the Mufassal surahs. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have married you to her, but teach her the Qur'an, and when Allah provides for you, give her compensation for it too." So the man married her on that basis.
Abu al-Hasan (al-Daraqutni) said: Utbah alone narrated it, and he is matruk al-hadith (abandoned). The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Utbah bin al-Sakan is accused of fabrication, and this is batil (false), with no basis. And Allah knows best.
