A man from Anazah said to Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), when he was sent away from al-Sham: "I want to ask you about a hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: "Then I will tell you, unless it is a secret." I said: "It is not a secret. Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shake hands with you when you met him?" He said: "Whenever I met him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) shook hands with me. One day he sent someone for me while I was not at home. When I came home, I was told that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent someone for me, so I went to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting on his couch, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) embraced me. That was a very fine moment, very fine indeed."

It is narrated from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that it was said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! When we meet, should we bow to one another? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Then he asked: Should we embrace one another? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Then he asked: Should we shake hands? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."
Only Hanzalah al-Sadusi narrated this, and he had become confused (in his memory); Yahya al-Qattan abandoned him because of his confusion. And Allah knows best.

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was at a water (spring) of his when news reached him that Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) was heading for Iraq, so he caught up with him. (The narrator) mentioned the long hadith in which he told him to turn back, but he refused to turn back. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) embraced him, wept and said: 'Astawdi'uka Allaha min qatil' (I entrust you to Allah, fearing that you will be slain).

Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) used to dislike shaking hands. The narrator said: I mentioned this to al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: The Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), whenever they met, would shake hands, and when they returned from a journey, they would embrace one another.
