Uyaynah bin Hisn and al-Aqra' bin Habis (may Allah be pleased with them both) both came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O successor of the Messenger of Allah! We have barren land in which there is no pasture and nothing of benefit; if you see fit for us to cultivate and farm it, then grant us that land." Then, mentioning the long hadith, the narrator says that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to give to you to win your hearts, and Islam in those days was weak; now Allah Almighty has given Islam honour, so go and exert yourselves to the utmost; may Allah not spare you if you spare (yourselves)."

Abu al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I came to Abu Wa'il and Abu Burdah (may Allah have mercy on them both) with the zakah, and the two of them were in charge of the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal), and they received that wealth. Then when I came a second time with the zakah, only Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) was there. He said: Take this wealth back and distribute it to those entitled to it. I said: What shall I do with the share of those who used to be given to win their hearts? He said: Return it to others.
