Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to demand repayment of a debt from a man. Then it happened that the man hid himself. When he met him again, he said to him: Why did you do that? He said: Because of hardship. So he made him swear to it, and he swore. He sent for his deed of acknowledgement and gave it to him, and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever is lenient with someone in hardship, or forgives him the debt, Allah Almighty will save him from the distresses of the Day of Resurrection."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to make an insolvent man swear by Allah: Do you truly have nothing with which to pay? Neither goods, nor by borrowing from someone, or he said: nor any dirham. And if you obtain something from someone without our knowing of it, you will pay with it. Then they would let him go, that is, they would give him respite.
