Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Ma'mar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever hoards is a sinner." Someone said to Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him): But you also practise ihtikar (hoarding)? Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ma'mar (may Allah be pleased with him), who narrates this hadith, also hoards himself.

Sayyiduna Ma'mar bin Abi Ma'mar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None hoards except a sinner." Ata said: I said to Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him): Do you also practise ihtikar (hoarding)? He said: Ma'mar also used to practise ihtikar. In one narration it says that Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah be pleased with him) used to practise ihtikar in olive oil.
The Shaykh said: The details of ihtikar are explained in the books of fiqh, and my opinion about these two men is that they did not practise the forbidden kind of ihtikar. And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the ihtikar of wheat.

Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Rabi'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that one day Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the market and noticed that people were hoarding with their surplus gold. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, and no delight of the eye! Allah Almighty brings provision to us, until when it arrives in our market, some people stand up and keep it back with their gold from the needy and the widows, that is, they hoard, until, when the one who brings goods to the market leaves, these hoarders sell as they please. But any merchant who brings goods in summer and winter and stops in our market, such a merchant is Umar's guest; let him sell his goods as Allah Almighty wills and hold them back as Allah Almighty wills.
