أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي وَأَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنَ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الْمُزَكِّي قَالُوا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا بَحْرُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، قَالَ قُرِئَ عَلَى ابْنِ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَكَ يُونُسُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، أَنَّ نَافِعًا حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ ". قَالَ: وَقَالَ نَافِعٌ: وَقَدْ أَرَانِي عَبْدُ اللهِ الْمَكَانَ الَّذِي كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ فِيهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ. رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ عَنْ أَبِي الطَّاهِرِ كِلَاهُمَا عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf in the last ten (days) of Ramadan. Nafi' said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) showed me the place in the mosque where he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي، وَأَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الْمُزَكِّي، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا بَحْرُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، قَالَ: قُرِئَ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَكَ يُونُسُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، وَمَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ، وَاللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، وَعَمْرَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عِيسَى ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ وَمُوسَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الذُّهْلِيَانُ قَالَا: ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا اعْتَكَفَ يُدْنِي إِلَيَّ رَأْسَهُ فَأُرَجِّلُهُ، وَكَانَ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْبَيْتَ إِلَّا لِحَاجَةِ الْإِنْسَانِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَحْيَى وَفِي رِوَايَةِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنِ الْجَمَاعَةِ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَدْخُلُ الْبَيْتَ إِلَّا لِحَاجَةِ الْإِنْسَانِ، وَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا: كَانَ يُدْخِلُ عَلَيَّ رَأْسَهُ وَهُوَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَأُرَجِّلُهُ وَقَالَ ⦗٥١٩⦘ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، وَعَمْرَةَ وَكَأَنَّهُ حَمَلَ رِوَايَةَ مَالِكٍ عَلَى رِوَايَةِ اللَّيْثِ وَيُونُسَ، وَأَمَّا مَالِكٌ فَإِنَّهُ يَقُولُ فِيهِ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَحْيَى هَكَذَا وَأَخْرَجَاهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ وَعَمْرَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ.
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in i'tikaf, he would bring his blessed head close to me and I would comb it, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) would not enter the house except for a human need. أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ شَرِيكٍ، ثنا يَحْيَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ بُكَيْرٍ، ثنا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفَ أَزْوَاجُهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ، وَالسُّنَّةُ فِي الْمُعْتَكِفِ أَنْ لَا يَخْرُجَ إِلَّا لِلْحَاجَةِ الَّتِي لَا بُدَّ مِنْهَا وَلَا يَعُودُ مَرِيضًا وَلَا يَمَسُّ امْرَأَةً وَلَا يُبَاشِرُهَا وَلَا اعْتِكَافَ إِلَّا فِي مَسْجِدِ جَمَاعَةٍ، وَالسُّنَّةُ فِيمَنِ اعْتَكَفَ أَنْ يَصُومَ.
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf in the last ten (days) of Ramadan until Allah took him (peace and blessings be upon him) in death; then his wives continued to observe i'tikaf after him (peace and blessings be upon him).
The Sunnah for the one in i'tikaf is that he does not go out except for a need that cannot be avoided, does not visit the sick, does not touch a woman nor have intimate contact with her; there is no i'tikaf except in a congregational mosque; and the Sunnah for one observing i'tikaf is that he also fasts.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ أَبِي الْمَعْرُوفِ الْفَقِيهُ، أنبأ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ الرَّازِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، أنبأ مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ثنا هِشَامٌ، ثنا قَتَادَةُ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ وَالْحَسَنَ قَالَا: " لَا اعْتِكَافَ إِلَّا فِي مَسْجِدٍ تُقَامُ فِيهِ الصَّلَاةُ ".
Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) both said: There is no i'tikaf except in a mosque in which the congregational prayer is established.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ السُّدَيْرِيُّ، بِخُسْرَوْجِرْدَ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الْخُسْرَوَجُرْدِيُّ، ثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زَنْجُوَيْهِ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ، ثنا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ الْأَزْدِيِّ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: " إِنَّ أَبْغَضَ الْأُمُورِ إِلَى اللهِ الْبِدَعُ وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْبِدَعِ الِاعْتِكَافَ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ الَّتِي فِي الدُّورِ ".
Ali al-Azdi narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that: "The most hated of matters to Allah Almighty are innovations, and among these innovations is performing i'tikaf in the mosques that are inside houses."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْعَلَوِيُّ أنبأ أَبُو نَصْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَمْدَوَيْهِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ الْفَازِيُّ، ثنا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ آدَمَ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ جَامِعِ بْنِ أَبِي رَاشِدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ حُذَيْفَةُ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: عُكُوفًا بَيْنَ دَارِكَ وَدَارِ أَبِي مُوسَى وَقَدْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " لَا اعْتِكَافَ إِلَّا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ " أَوْ قَالَ: " إِلَّا فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ الثَّلَاثَةِ " فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: لَعَلَّكَ نَسِيتَ وَحَفِظُوا أَوْ أَخْطَأْتَ وَأَصَابُوا. الشَّكُّ مِنِّي.
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): (People are) performing i'tikaf between your house and the house of Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), while I know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no i'tikaf except in al-Masjid al-Haram," or he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "except in the three mosques." Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Perhaps you forgot and they remembered, or you erred and they were right. (The narrator said:) The doubt is from me.
