Book of Fasting
باب: الصائم يمضمض، أو يستنشق فيرفق ولا يبالغ، فإن بالغ حتى وصل إلى رأسه أو إلى جوفه أفطر
The fasting person rinses the mouth or nose gently without exaggeration; if he exaggerates until it reaches his head or stomach he has broken his fast

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مِلْحَانَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، ثنا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ بُكَيْرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: هَشَشْتُ يَوْمًا فَقَبَّلْتُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ، فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: صَنَعْتُ الْيَوْمَ أَمْرًا عَظِيمًا، قَبَّلْتُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ تَمَضْمَضْتَ بِالْمَاءِ وَأَنْتَ صَائِمٌ "، فَقُلْتُ: لَا بَأْسَ بِذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " فَفِيمَ ".
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: One day I kissed (my wife) while I was fasting. Then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Today I have done a grave thing: I kissed while fasting. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you think if you rinsed your mouth with water while fasting?" I said: There is no harm in that. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then in what (is the harm)?"
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بِشْرَانَ الْعَدْلُ بِبَغْدَادَ، أنبأ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ لَقِيطِ بْنِ صَبِرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " خَلِّلْ أَصَابِعَكَ، وَأَسْبِغِ الْوُضُوءَ، وَإِذَا اسْتَنْشَقْتَ فَبَالِغْ، إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ صَائِمًا ".
Asim bin Laqit bin Sabirah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Pass water between your fingers, perform ablution thoroughly, and when you sniff water into your nose, do so deeply, unless you are fasting."
