Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him a written document, and in it he wrote: This is the obligation (the prescribed scale) which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laid down for the Muslims, which Allah and His Messenger have commanded. Then he narrated the hadith, and in it was: "There is zakah on grazing sheep."
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When grazing sheep number from forty up to one hundred and twenty, there is one sheep due on them."

Abu Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote a letter to the people of Yemen, and in this hadith he mentioned: "On every five grazing camels there is one sheep, until they reach twenty-four. And in it also: On every forty grazing sheep there is one sheep, until they reach one hundred and twenty. If they exceed that by one, then instead of one sheep there are two sheep."

Bahz bin Hakim narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "In grazing camels, on every forty there is a bint labun (a she-camel in its third year), and camels are not to be separated from their count. Whoever gives it seeking reward will have its reward, and whoever withholds it, we will take it from him along with half of his camels, as one of the firm decrees of our Lord. Nothing of it is lawful for the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no zakah on working camels."
This is how Ghalib al-Qattan narrated it. The same has been narrated concerning cattle from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) as marfu' (from the Prophet) and from Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) as mawquf (his own statement), and both chains contain weakness.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: There is no zakah on animals used for tilling the land.
It has also been narrated from Jabir as marfu' (from the Prophet), but its chain contains weakness; what is correct is that it is mawquf (his own statement).

Abu al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Jabir (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Zakah is not to be collected from the cows with which ploughing is done. This chain is sahih (authentic), and this is the view of Mujahid, Sa'id bin Jubayr, Umar bin Abd al-Aziz and Ibrahim al-Nakha'i. Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: There is no zakah on working oxen when they are in a city.
