Sayyidah Umm Waraqah bint Abdullah bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit her; he (peace and blessings be upon him) had named her "al-Shahidah" (the martyr), and she had memorised the Qur'an. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for the Battle of Badr, she said: Permit me too, so that I may treat the wounded and nurse the sick; perhaps Allah will grant me martyrdom as well. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah is going to gift you martyrdom." He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to call her al-Shahidah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to lead the people of her household in prayer. Her slave-girl and slave together killed her during the caliphate of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). It was said that Umm Waraqah (may Allah be pleased with her) had been killed by her slave and slave-girl and that the two had fled. They were caught, brought back and crucified. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke the truth when he said: "Come, let us go and visit al-Shahidah."

Ibn Khallad al-Ansari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Umm Waraqah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come with us; let us go to al-Shahidah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the call to prayer (adhan) and the iqamah be given for her, and that she lead the people of her household in the obligatory prayers.
