Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who has read the most of the Qur'an among them should lead the people in prayer. If they are equal in recitation, then the one who knows the Sunnah best. If they are equal in knowledge of the Sunnah, then the one who was earliest in emigration (hijrah). If they are equal in emigration too, then the one who is oldest in age. No man should be led in prayer in his own domain of authority, nor should anyone sit in his place of honour in his house except with his permission."
