Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a servant and Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led them in prayer during the illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he passed away. On Monday, when the rows for the prayer had been formed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew back the curtain and was looking at us while standing; his face (peace and blessings be upon him) was like a page of an open Qur'an. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled, and we became very happy at seeing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped back on his heels to join the row, thinking that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come out for the prayer, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled with his hand: "Complete your prayer." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went into the chamber and let the curtain fall, and he passed away that same day.
