Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The farther the distance from which a man walks to the prayer, the greater the reward he receives above all people. And the one who waits for the imam so that he may pray with him is greater in reward than the one who prays and then sleeps."

Abu Uthman narrates from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that I know of a man who was a resident of Madinah. His house was quite far from the mosque, yet he would attend the prayers with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said to him: If you were to buy a donkey, you could ride it to come in the heat and the darkness. He said: I do not like my house to be beside the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of this, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Otherwise how would my footsteps be recorded, and my going back to my family and my coming (to the mosque)? Or as he said. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah will reward you for your long journey, and you will receive all that you intended."

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Banu Salimah intended to move from their distant homes and come close to the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked that you should vacate these houses, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Banu Salimah! Do you not want the reward of your footsteps?" They said: "Of course," and so they stayed where they were.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that Banu Salimah wanted to move close to the mosque, and the land there was vacant. This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Banu Salimah! Keep to your homes; your footsteps will be recorded." So they stayed there and said: It would not have pleased us to have moved our homes.
