Abdullah bin Abi Qays says: I said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): How many (rak'ahs) was the witr of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? She said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed four and three, six and three, eight and three, ten and three, and he did not pray fewer than seven witr, nor more than thirteen. Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) added: He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pray witr with the two rak'ahs of Fajr. I said: How was his (peace and blessings be upon him) witr? She said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) never left it. Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) did not mention the words "six and three". It is possible that what is meant is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed three witr, neither sitting nor saying the salam in between, so it would carry the meaning of the narration of Hisham bin Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him).
(b) A narration with the same meaning as the narration of Hisham bin Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) about five rak'ahs of witr has also been reported from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sa'id bin Jubayr narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on some errand. That day was the turn of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), the maternal aunt of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). He went to her, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the mosque at that time. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I lay down in the apartment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I was saying to myself that today I would count how much the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prays. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came after a third of the night had passed, while I was lying in his (peace and blessings be upon him) apartment. Then he said: "Go to sleep." He (peace and blessings be upon him) took a sheet from Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her); part of it was over the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and part of it was over Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed two rak'ahs at a time until he had offered eight rak'ahs. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed five witr and did not sit in between. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat and praised Allah as He deserves. He (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Him abundantly, and at the end he said these words: 'Allahumma ij'al li nuran fi qalbi, waj'al li nuran fi sam'i, waj'al li nuran fi basari, waj'al li nuran 'an yamini, wa nuran 'an shimali, waj'al li nuran bayna yadayya, wa nuran khalfi, wa zidni nuran, wa zidni nuran' (O Allah, place light for me in my heart, place light for me in my hearing, place light for me in my sight, place light for me on my right and light on my left, place light for me in front of me and light behind me, and increase me in light, increase me in light).
