Ya'la bin Mamlak asked Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) about the recitation and night prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: "What have you to do with his prayer and recitation? He (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray, then sleep for as long as he had prayed, then pray for as long as he had slept, then sleep for as long as he had prayed, until morning came." Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) described his (peace and blessings be upon him) manner of recitation: the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was letter by letter (that is, every single letter could be understood).

Abu Jamrah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "I recite the Qur'an quickly; I rush through it!" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "That I should recite Surah al-Baqarah slowly and distinctly is dearer to me than that I should rush through the whole Qur'an."

Abu Jamrah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I said to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "I am a man who recites very quickly, and sometimes I recite the whole Qur'an once or twice in a single night." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "That I should recite a single surah is dearer to me than doing what you do. If you do such a thing, then recite in a way that your ears can hear and your heart retains it."

Abu Jamrah narrates from Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) that Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Recite the Qur'an and stir the hearts by means of it, and let none of you be concerned only with reaching the end of the surah."

Kharashah bin al-Hurr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) one night while he was praying and repeating a single verse over and over until morning came. He bowed and prostrated with it, and the verse is: "If You punish them, they are Your servants" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 118]. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, you kept repeating one verse until morning came." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I asked my Lord for intercession for my Ummah, and this intercession will be for whoever has not associated partners with Allah."
