It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw spittle or phlegm on the qiblah side of the mosque, so I got up and scraped it off. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would any of you like it if, while he was praying, a man came and spat or put phlegm in his face?" Then he said: "When one of you is praying, let him not spit in front of him or to his right, but let him spit to his left or under his foot. If he cannot do that, then let him spit into his garment and rub it."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you is praying, let him not spit in front of him, for he is facing his Lord, the Possessor of honour and greatness; nor to his right. Rather, let him spit to his left or under his left foot. If he is not able to, then let him spit into the edge of his garment, then rub the garment together."
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is as if I am looking at the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) rubbing his garment together.

Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) scraped it off and said: "When any one of you stands in prayer, he is speaking privately with his Lord," or he said: "Allah is between him and the qiblah, so let him spit to his left or under his foot." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took an edge of his garment, spat into it and rubbed it, then said: "Or let him do like this."

He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and scraped it off, then said: "When any one of you stands in prayer, he is speaking privately with his Lord," or he said: "His Lord is between him and the qiblah. So none of you should ever spit towards his qiblah; rather, let him spit to his left or under his foot." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took an edge of his garment or cloak, spat into it and rubbed it, and said: "Or let him do like this."
