It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man of the Ansar used to lead the people in prayer in the Mosque of Quba. Whenever he began a surah, he would first recite Surah al-Ikhlas. When he finished it, he would then recite another surah along with it. He did this in every rak'ah. Those praying behind him objected to this, (saying): You begin with Surah al-Ikhlas, then you think that this surah is not sufficient and add another surah to it; why do you do this? Either recite only this one or else recite another one. He said to them: I am not going to leave this surah. If you are pleased, I will lead you in prayer, and if you dislike it, I am ready to give up leading the prayer. The people considered him the most virtuous and best among them, and did not like anyone else to lead them. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them, they put this matter before him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "O servant of Allah, why do you not do as your companions say? And what has urged you to keep to this surah in every rak'ah?" He said: O Messenger of Allah! I love this surah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, your love for it will admit you into Paradise."
