It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for prayer, he would recite: "'Wajjahtu wajhiya lilladhi fatara al-samawati wa al-arda hanifan wa ma ana min al-mushrikin' (I have turned my face towards the One who created the earth and the heavens, inclining sincerely in submission, and I am not of the polytheists). Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. He has no partner; with this I have been commanded, and I am of the Muslims [Surah al-An'am: 162-163]. O Allah, You are the King; there is no true god except You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and I confess my sin, so forgive me all my sins; there is none who forgives sins except You. Guide me to good manners; there is none who guides to good manners except You. Turn bad manners away from me; there is none who turns bad manners away except You. Here I am in Your presence. All good is in Your hands, and evil cannot be attributed to You. I am with You and I make my entreaty to You. You are Blessed and Exalted. I seek Your forgiveness and I turn to You alone in repentance." Then when he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, he would say: "'Allahumma laka raka'tu, wa bika amantu, wa laka aslamtu, khasha'a laka sam'i wa basari wa mukhkhi wa 'izami wa 'asabi' (O Allah, for You I have bowed, in You I have believed and to You I have submitted; before You alone my ears, eyes, brain, bones and sinews are humbled)." When he raised his blessed head from bowing, he would say: "'Allahumma rabbana laka al-hamdu mil'a al-samawati wa mil'a al-ardi wa mil'a ma baynahuma wa mil'a ma shi'ta min shay'in ba'd' (O Allah, all praise belongs to You alone, so much that it fills the heavens and the earth and the space between them, and fills whatever else You will besides them)." Then when he prostrated, he would say: "'Allahumma laka sajadtu, wa bika amantu, wa laka aslamtu, sajada wajhi lilladhi khalaqahu wa sawwarahu wa shaqqa sam'ahu wa basarahu, tabaraka Allahu ahsanu al-khaliqin' (O Allah, for You I have prostrated, in You I have believed and to You I have submitted; my face prostrates before the One who created it and fashioned in it hearing and sight. Blessed is Allah, the best of creators)." Then between the tashahhud and the salam he (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite: "'Allahumma ighfir li ma qaddamtu wa ma akhkhartu, wa ma asrartu wa ma a'lantu, wa ma asraftu, wa ma anta a'lamu bihi minni, anta al-muqaddimu wa anta al-mu'akhkhiru, la ilaha illa ant' (O Allah, forgive me what I did before and what I did after, what I did in secret and what I did openly, the excess I committed, and what You know better than I do. You alone are the One who brings forward and You alone are the One who holds back; there is no true god except You)."
(b) In the narration of Abd al-Aziz it is that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began the prayer, he would say the takbir, then he would say: 'Ana awwalu al-muslimin' (I am the first of the Muslims).
The narrator said: When he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head from bowing, he would say: "'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah, rabbana wa laka al-hamdu mil'a al-samawati wa mil'a al-ardi wa mil'a ma baynahuma wa mil'a ma shi'ta min shay'in ba'd' (Allah has heard the one who praised Him. O our Lord, praise belongs to You alone, so much that it fills all the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and fills after them everything You will)." And he said: "'Alladhi khalaqahu wa sawwarahu wa shaqqa sam'ahu wa basarahu, tabaraka Allahu ahsanu al-khaliqin' (the One who gave it the finest form and opened in it its ears and eyes. Blessed is Allah, the best of creators)." Then when he gave the salam - the narrator said that he mentioned the supplication but did not mention his (peace and blessings be upon him) words 'wa ma asraftu'.
(c) Through another chain the words 'wa ma asraftu' are also reported.

(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began the prayer, he would recite this: "There is no true god except You; You are free of all imperfection. I have wronged myself and done evil deeds, so forgive me. Indeed, none can forgive except You. (b) The wording of the narration of Abd al-Aziz bin Abi Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) is 'wa ana awwalu al-muslimin' (and I am the very first of the Muslims), and in some narrations it is 'ana min al-muslimin' (I am of the Muslims).
(c) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In place of 'ana awwalu al-muslimin', the words 'ana min al-muslimin' are better.
(d) The Shaykh said that Muhammad bin al-Munkadir (may Allah have mercy on him) and the jurists of Madinah instructed this.
(n) Al-Nadr bin Shumayl (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The explanation of 'wa al-sharru laysa ilayk' (and evil is not (attributed) to You) is that nearness to You cannot be attained through evil.
