It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him): I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) urinated, then came and performed ablution and wiped over his khuffs (leather socks). He placed his right hand on the right khuff and his left hand on the left khuff, then wiped over the upper part of both with a single wipe, and it is as if I am looking at the fingers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the khuffs.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): If the religion were based on opinion, wiping the bottom of the khuff (leather sock) would be more fitting than its top, yet I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe over the upper part of his khuffs.

Yazid bin Abd al-Aziz narrates this hadith from al-A'mash: "I used to think that the inner (lower) part of the feet was more deserving of wiping, until I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) would wipe only over the upper part of his khuffs (leather socks)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): I used to think that the inner (that is, lower) part of the feet was more deserving of wiping than the outer part, until I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and wiped over the upper part of his khuffs (leather socks). (b) All these narrations that mention the khuffs are evidence that it (the other wording) was abridged.

(a) Abd Khayr said: I saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) perform ablution and wipe, then he said: "Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the top of the feet, I would have thought that their lower part, or inner part, was more deserving of it." The two authors of the Sahih did not use Abd Khayr as evidence. This, and what is narrated with the same meaning, refers only to the feet of the khuff (leather sock), as indicated by what has preceded and by what we have narrated from Khalid bin Alqamah, from Abd Khayr, from Ali: (b) Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), describing the method of the ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), stated that he (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his feet three times each.

Salim bin Abdullah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) about wiping over the khuffs (leather socks), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordering us to wipe over the upper part of the khuffs when, he said, they had been put on in a state of ablution."
(b) Khalid bin Abi Bakr is not strong, and what has preceded is sufficient.
