It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh (may Allah be pleased with her) sought a ruling from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: I have prolonged bleeding (istihadah) and I do not become pure; should I then leave the prayer? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is from a vein; it is not menstruation. When it (menstruation) comes, leave the prayer, and when it ends, wash away the trace of the blood, perform ablution and pray. That is from a vein; it is not menstruation."
(b) In Sahih Muslim the words 'tawadda'i' ("perform ablution") are not present. Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in the hadith of Hammad bin Zayd there is an additional word which we did not narrate; and this addition is not preserved either.
(c) Hisham says that his father said: Then perform ablution for every prayer until that time (of menstruation) comes.

He said: Ablution is due to what comes out, not to what goes in; and the breaking of the fast is due to what goes in, not to what comes out.
This is also narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but it is not established.
