Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to follow the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a vessel of water for his ablution and his call of nature. One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) found him and asked: "Who is this?" He said: I am Abu Hurayrah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Find me some stones so that I may clean myself, and do not bring me a bone or dung." I brought stones in my garment and placed them by his (peace and blessings be upon him) side, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished and stood up, and I followed him (peace and blessings be upon him).
I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with bones and dung? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The delegation of Nasibin came to me and asked me for provision, so I prayed to Allah for them that they would not pass by any dung or bone without finding food on it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): I went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), carrying a vessel, and I found him (peace and blessings be upon him) intending to relieve himself.

Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him) reports from his father that he heard Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to relieve himself and ordered me to bring him three stones. I found two stones and searched for the third but could not find it, so I took a piece of dung and brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) took the two stones, threw away the dung and said: "This is riks (filth)."
Imam Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In my view the narration of Isra'il is more established and more authentic, because Isra'il is more reliable in narrating from Abu Ishaq than these others, and Qays bin al-Rabi' corroborated him in that. He said: Zuhayr is not that strong in Abu Ishaq, because he heard from Abu Ishaq late, and in the last part of his life Abu Ishaq's memory had deteriorated.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): I went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for his call of nature, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring me something with which to clean myself, and do not bring me dung."
This narration, if authentic, strengthens the narration of Abu Ishaq from Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad, except that Layth bin Abi Sulaym is da'if (weak).

It is narrated from Amir: I asked Alqamah: Was Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night of the jinn? He said: I asked Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): Was any of you with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night of the jinn? He said: No, but one night we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and we missed him, so we searched for him in the valleys and the mountain passes. We said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) has been carried off or assassinated. We spent the worst night that any people have ever spent. When morning came, there he (peace and blessings be upon him) was, coming from the direction of Hira. We said: O Messenger of Allah, we missed you and searched hard for you, but we could not find you, and we spent the worst night that any people have ever spent. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The caller of the jinn came to me, so I went with him and recited the Qur'an to them." The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took us and showed us their traces and the traces of their fires. They had asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) for provision, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every bone over which the name of Allah has been mentioned will fall into your hands as full of meat as it can be, and every piece of dung is fodder for your animals." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not clean yourselves with these two, for they are the food of your (jinn) brothers."

Dawud bin Abi Hind (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates with this same chain up to his words, 'and the traces of their fires.'
(b) Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: They asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) for provision, and they were jinn of al-Jazirah. The rest of the hadith is the words of al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him), set apart from the hadith of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Muhammad bin Abi Adi narrates from Dawud up to 'and the traces of their fires,' then he says that Dawud said: I do not know whether it is in the hadith of Alqamah or in the hadith of Amir that they asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for provision that night; then he mentioned it.

(b) Ali bin Rabah's hearing from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established. The first chain, which is Syrian, is not strong. And Allah knows best.
(c) In the narrations of Abu Uthman bin Sannah al-Khuza'i and Abd al-Rahman bin Rafi' al-Tanukhi from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), there is no mention of charcoal.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ruwayfi' bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him): In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), one of us would take his brother's lean camel on the condition that half of whatever he gained as spoils would be for him and half for us; and one of us would get the arrowhead and the feathers, and the other the shaft. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Ruwayfi', perhaps your life will be prolonged after me, so inform the people that whoever ties knots in his beard, or hangs a bowstring around his neck, or cleans himself with an animal's dung or a bone, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is free of him."
