Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade continuous fasting (wisal). A man from among the Muslims said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! But you (peace and blessings be upon him) also practise wisal? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which of you is like me? I spend the night and my Lord gives me food and drink." When they would not refrain from wisal, he (peace and blessings be upon him) continued the fast with them for one day, then another day as well, then the new moon was sighted. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had it been delayed, I would have continued even longer," as if punishing them for not refraining (from wisal).
