Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. Most of us were those who had taken shade with a cloth or the like. As for those who were not fasting, they watered the mounts, prepared them and gave them rest; but those who were fasting did nothing of the sort. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those who broke the fast have gone ahead with the reward."
Abu Mu'awiyah said in his hadith: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey; some of us were fasting and some were not. We stopped at a place on a hot day; most of those of us with cloths were in the shade, and among us were those who were shielding themselves from the sun with their hands. The fasting ones collapsed, while those not fasting stood up, pitched the tents and watered the mounts. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Today those not fasting have taken the lead in reward."
