Chapter: Evidence that his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) "The best charity is that given out of surplus" and his saying, when asked about the best charity, "The effort of one who has little" differ only according to people's states in patience with hardship and poverty and contentment with the barest sufficiency, and success is from Allah

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ، أنبأ أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْمُحَمَّدَ آبَاذِيُّ، ثنا الْعَبَّاسُ الدُّورِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أنبأ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَا: ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: جَاءَ ثَلَاثَةُ نَفَرٍ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمْ: لِي مِائَةُ أُوقِيَّةٍ فَتَصَدَّقْتُ بِعَشَرَةِ أَوَاقٍ، وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ: لِي مِائَةُ دِينَارٍ فَتَصَدَّقْتُ بِعَشَرَةِ دَنَانِيرَ، وَقَالَ الثَّالِثُ: لِي عَشَرَةُ دَنَانِيرَ فَتَصَدَّقْتُ بِدِينَارٍ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " تَصَدَّقَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنْكُمْ بِعُشْرِ مَالِهِ، كُلُّكُمْ فِي الْأَجْرِ سَوَاءٌ ".
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Three men came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One of them said: "I have a hundred uqiyahs, and I gave ten uqiyahs in charity." The second said: "I have a hundred dinars, and I gave ten dinars in charity." And the third said: "I have ten dinars, and I gave one dinar in charity." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Each one of you has given a tenth of his wealth in charity, and you are all equal in reward."
