Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates a similar hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), except that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Wa man yastaghni yughnihi Allah' "Whoever seeks to be independent, Allah will make him independent," and he did not mention the phrase about refraining from asking (isti'faf).
