Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd bin Ubadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him as a (zakah) collector. His father said to him: Do not leave until you take an instruction from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he wanted to leave, he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Qays! Do not come on the Day of Resurrection in such a state that there is a camel on your neck, groaning, or a cow, lowing, or a sheep, bleating; and do not be like Abu Righal." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! What happened with Abu Righal? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He was a collector whom Salih sent. He found a man in his flock of nearly a hundred sheep, all of them dry except for one sheep, and he had a small son who had no mother; the milk of that sheep was his livelihood. The owner of the sheep said: Who are you? He said: I am the envoy of the Messenger of Allah. So he welcomed him and said: These are my sheep; take whichever you like. He looked at the milch sheep and said: This one. The man said: There is this boy, who, as you see, has nothing to eat or drink other than it. He said: If you love milk, then I too love milk. He said: Then take two sheep in its place. He kept on increasing (his offer) until he offered five dry sheep, but he still refused. When he saw this, he took his bow, shot him and killed him, and said: No one should reach the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with this news before me. So the owner of the sheep came to Salih and informed him, and Salih said: 'Allahumma il'an Aba Righal, Allahumma il'an Aba Righal' (O Allah, curse Abu Righal; O Allah, curse Abu Righal)." Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Excuse Qays from the collectorship.
