Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man brought (a piece of) gold like an egg and said: O Messenger of Allah! I obtained this from a mine; take it, it is charity. I do not own anything other than it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him. Then he came from his right side and said the same, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him. Then he came from his left side, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away. Then he came from behind him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) took it and threw it at him; had it hit him, it would have hurt him badly or broken one of his bones. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of you brings something which is all that he owns and says: This is charity; then he sits and stretches out his hand to the people. The best charity is that after which a person remains self-sufficient, not in need."
It is possible that he (peace and blessings be upon him) refrained from taking what was obligatory because it was below the nisab, and another possibility also exists; the hadiths on the nisab of gold and silver have already passed.
