Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring to me a quarter of a tenth: one dirham from every forty dirhams. There is no zakah on it until it amounts to two hundred dirhams. When it becomes two hundred dirhams and a year has passed over it, five dirhams are due on it. And nothing is due from you until you have twenty dinars; when you have twenty dinars and a year has passed over them, half a dinar is due on them. Then whatever is more than that, the zakah will be according to the same calculation." The narrator said: I do not know whether "the zakah will be according to the same calculation" was said by Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), or whether he narrated it as a saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). However, in the hadith that Jarir narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), it says: "There is no zakah on any wealth until a year has passed over it."
