Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman said: I asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): How much dowry (mahr) did he (peace and blessings be upon him) fix? She (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The dowry he (peace and blessings be upon him) fixed for his wives was twelve uqiyahs and a nashsh. Then she (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: Do you know what the nashsh is? I said: No, I do not know. She said: It means half an uqiyah, so that comes to five hundred dirhams, and this was his (peace and blessings be upon him) dowry for his wives.
Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded it in his Sahih from Ishaq bin Ibrahim. It contains evidence that an uqiyah is forty dirhams and that five uqiyahs are two hundred dirhams.
