Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) became caliph after him, and those among the Arabs who rejected (Islam) did so, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Bakr! How will you fight the people when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah). So whoever affirms La ilaha illallah has protected his wealth and his life from me, except by its right, and his reckoning is with Allah"? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I will certainly fight whoever makes a distinction between prayer and zakah. Indeed, zakah is the right of wealth. By Allah! If they withhold from me even a young goat that they used to give in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I will fight them for withholding it." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! It was nothing other than that I saw that Allah Almighty had opened the chest of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) for fighting, and I knew that he was in the right. Bahz bin Hakim narrates from his father that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever gives it seeking reward will have its reward, and whoever withholds it, I will take it from him."
