It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the people turning away from the religion, he (peace and blessings be upon him) invoked against them: 'Allahumma sab'an ka-sab'i Yusuf' (O Allah, afflict them with (years of) famine like the famine of Yusuf). So famine seized them until they ate even carrion, hides and bones. Then Abu Sufyan and the people of Makkah came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad, you claim that you have been sent as a mercy, and your people are perishing, so pray to Allah for them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated to Allah Almighty, and they were given rain, and it rained continuously for seven days. Then the people complained of the excess of rain, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allahumma hawalayna wa la 'alayna' (O Allah, let it rain around us and not upon us). Then the clouds cleared from above his (peace and blessings be upon him) head. The narrator says: The people round about continued to receive rain. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The sign of the smoke (al-Dukhan) that has passed refers to that very famine which struck them, and this is the saying of Allah Almighty: "Indeed, We will remove the punishment for a little while; indeed, you will return (to disbelief)." [Surah al-Dukhan: 15]. (Also passed are) the sign of al-Lizam (the inescapable punishment), al-Batshah al-Kubra (the Great Seizure) on the Day of Badr, and the splitting of the moon.
