Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that on the day of the solar eclipse the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, said the takbir and recited at length, then bowed for a long time, then raised his head from bowing and said: 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah has heard the call of the one who praised Him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) remained standing as he was and recited at length, but it was less than the first recitation. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed for a long time, but it was less than the first bowing. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated for a long time. He did the same in the second rak'ah. Then he concluded with the salam, and the sun had become bright. He (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people, saying: "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They do not lose their light because of anyone's death or life. When you see them in this state, hasten to the prayer."
