Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the prayer ground on the day of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the first thing he began with was the prayer. Then he would turn and face the people while the people were seated in their rows. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would admonish and counsel them and give them commands. If he (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to dispatch an army, he would dispatch it, or he would order something, and then he would leave. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The people continued in this way until I went out with Marwan on Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr. When we reached the prayer ground, there was a pulpit made of bricks which Kathir bin al-Salt had built. Marwan wanted to climb it. When Marwan intended to climb it before the prayer, I pulled him by the hand, and the people gathered, and he delivered the sermon before the prayer. I said: You have changed the practice. Marwan said: "O Abu Sa'id, the practice which you know is gone." I said: "By Allah, what I know is better than what I do not know." Marwan said: "The people do not sit after the prayer, so we have moved the sermon before the prayer."
