Umayr bin Hani' says: Abd al-Malik bin Marwan sent me with letters to al-Hajjaj. I came to him, and he had set up forty catapults against the House (the Ka'bah). I saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) praying with al-Hajjaj, and when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) came, he prayed with him as well. I said to him: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! You pray with these people while these are their deeds?" He said: "O brother from Syria! I do not praise them, nor do I obey a created being in disobedience to the Creator." He said: I said: "What do you say about the people of Syria?" He said: "I do not praise them." I said: "What do you think of the people of Makkah?" He said: "I do not excuse them. They are fighting over the world and throwing themselves into the Fire, just as flies fall into broth." I said: "What do you think of this pledge of allegiance that Marwan took?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "When we pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to hear and obey, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would add: 'As far as you are able.'"
