(a) Abu al-Tayyah narrates from a man that when Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to Basrah, he heard the people of Basrah narrating hadiths from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So he wrote to Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) asking him about them. Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote back to him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was walking when suddenly he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to one side, sat beside a wall and urinated. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of the Children of Israel urinated and the urine touched his body, he would cut it off with scissors. When one of you intends to urinate, let him seek a (soft) place for his urine."
(b) Abu al-Tayyah states in a narration that he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a soft spot at the foot of a wall and urinated, then said: "When one of you intends to urinate, let him seek a soft place."
