Bayhaqi 3903 — Speaking in prayer

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Even when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prayer we used to greet him with salam, before we went to Abyssinia, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to return our salam. When we came back from Abyssinia, I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) to greet him; he (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying. I greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not return the salam. I was seized with worry over matters new and old. I sat down, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now Allah Almighty's new command is that you do not talk during prayer."
(b) The hadith of Jabir bin Abdullah and Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with them both) on this has already passed. In our view, all of these are to be understood as referring to (the prohibition of) deliberate speech.
