Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led one of the two afternoon prayers (Zuhr or Asr). My strongest assumption is that he named Zuhr. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam after two rak'ahs and, in a state of anger, stood by a piece of wood at the front of the mosque. Hajjaj did not mention the state of anger. He placed his hand on that wood. Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and they too were too awed to speak to him. The hasty people went out quickly, saying: "Has the prayer been shortened?" Among the people was a man whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to call Dhul-Yadayn. Dhul-Yadayn said: "O Messenger of Allah! Did you forget, or has the prayer been shortened?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did not forget, and the prayer has not been shortened." He said: "Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah, you did forget." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is Dhul-Yadayn telling the truth?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak'ahs, then said the takbir and prostrated like his usual prostration or longer, then raised his head and said the takbir, then put his head down (for prostration) and said the takbir, and prostrated like his usual prostration or somewhat longer, then raised his head and said the takbir.
(b) In another narration of al-Bukhari: My strongest assumption is that it was the Asr prayer; and he said: Then he gave the salam, then said the takbir.
