أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نُعَيْمٍ، ثنا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى أَنْ يَأْكُلَ الرَّجُلُ بِشِمَالِهِ أَوْ يَمْشِيَ فِي نَعْلٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَأَنْ يَشْتَمِلَ الصَّمَّاءَ وَأَنْ يَحْتَبِيَ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ كَاشِفًا عَنْ فَرْجِهِ " رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ قُتَيْبَةَ وَاشْتِمَالُ الصَّمَّاءِ عِنْدَ الْفُقَهَاءِ أَنْ يَشْتَمِلَ بِثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ غَيْرُهُ ثُمَّ يَرْفَعَهُ مِنْ أَحَدِ جَانِبَيْهِ فَيَضَعَهُ عَلَى مَنْكِبَيْهِ فَيَبْدُوَ مِنْهُ فَرْجُهُ.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating with the left hand, walking in one shoe, wrapping oneself in ishtimal al-samma, and sitting with the knees drawn up (ihtiba') in a single garment in such a way that the private parts are exposed towards the sky.
According to the jurists, ishtimal means that a man wraps a single garment around himself, with no other garment on him, and then lifts it from one side and places it on his shoulders, so that his private parts are exposed.
