(a) It is narrated from Abu al-Jawza' that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to begin the prayer with the takbir and the recitation with Surah al-Fatihah, 'All praise is for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds' [Surah al-Fatihah: 2]. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, he would neither raise his head too high nor lower it too much, but keep it level. When he raised his head from bowing, he would not prostrate until he stood upright with composure, and when he raised his head from prostration, he would not make the (second) prostration until he sat upright with composure. When sitting, he would lay his left foot flat and keep his right foot upright, and after every two rak'ahs he would recite at-Tahiyyat. He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to forbid sitting in the manner of Satan, and he also forbade anyone to spread out his forearms the way a beast of prey does, and he would conclude the prayer with the salam.
(b) The wording of Yazid's narration is: 'Wa kana yanha 'an 'uqbat al-shaytan' (He used to forbid the squatting of Satan).
(c) Abd al-A'la says: 'Uqbat al-shaytan' means that one sits on the backs of both his feet.
