أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو عَمْرٍو مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ الْعَدْلُ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْغَزِّيُّ، ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، ثنا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: " كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ انْقِضَاءَ السُّورَةِ، حَتَّى تَنْزِلَ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، فَإِذَا نَزَلَتْ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ عَلِمُوا أَنَّ السُّورَةَ قَدِ انْقَضَتْ " وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ دُحَيْمُ بْنُ النُّعَيْمِ، عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَصَرَ بِهِ فَلَمْ يَذْكُرُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ فِي إِسْنَادِهِ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Muslims would not know of the end of a surah until "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Ever-Merciful" was revealed, and when "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" was revealed, they understood that the surah was complete.
