(a) It is narrated from Qays bin Abi Hazim that he said: I prayed behind Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Basrah. In the first rak'ah he recited Surah al-Fatihah and one verse of Surah al-Baqarah, then he bowed. Then he stood for the second rak'ah, and in it he recited Surah al-Fatihah and the second verse of Surah al-Baqarah, then he bowed. When he finished the prayer, he turned towards us and said: Allah Almighty says: "So recite whatever is easy of the Qur'an" [Surah al-Muzzammil: 20].
(b) Ali bin Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This chain is hasan (good), and in it is evidence for the one who says that the meaning of Allah's statement "So recite whatever is easy of the Qur'an" [Surah al-Muzzammil: 20] is that this applies only after the recitation of Surah al-Fatihah.
