Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "When a man has a share in a slave and then frees his share while he is alive, a fair value is to be set against him from his wealth, then the slave is freed."
Abu al-Walid al-Faqih (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Our companions said: His words "while he is alive" mean that the value is set during his lifetime, not after death.
