Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Tell me of a deed that will admit me into Paradise. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Although you have made your speech short, you have raised a very great (and important) question: free a soul ('itq al-nasamah) and release a neck (fakk al-raqabah)." He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Are these two not the same? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No. Freeing a soul means that you alone free a slave, and releasing a neck means helping with its price; and giving a milch animal as a gift, and keeping ties with a wrongdoing relative." He said: Who is able to do that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then feed the hungry and give water to the thirsty." He said: What if I am not able to do that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil." He said: And whoever is not able to do that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then restrain your tongue except from good."
