أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ، وَابْنُ بُكَيْرٍ قَالَا: ثنا اللَّيْثُ، حَدَّثَنِي عُقَيْلٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو حَسَنٍ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ وَكَانَ مِنْ قُدَمَاءِ مَوَالِي قُرَيْشٍ وَأَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مِنْهُمْ وَالصَّلَاحِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ امْرَأَةً تَقُولُ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ نَوْفلٍ تَسْتَفْتِيهِ فِي غُلَامٍ لَهَا، ابْنِ زِنْيَةٍ فِي رَقَبَةٍ كَانَتْ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ لَهَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نَوْفَلٍ: " لَا أَرَاهُ يَقْضِي الرَّقَبَةَ الَّتِي عَلَيْكِ عِتْقُ ابْنِ زِنْيَةٍ " قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نَوْفَلٍ: سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: " لَأَنْ أُحْمَلَ عَلَى نَعْلَيْنِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، أَحَبُّ إِلِيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُعْتِقَ ابْنَ زِنْيَةٍ ".
Abu Hasan, the freed slave of Abdullah bin al-Harith, who was among the early freed slaves of Quraysh and among their people of knowledge and righteousness, heard a woman saying to Abdullah bin Nawfal: I am obliged to free a slave; tell me about this. Abdullah bin Nawfal said: "You will not be discharged of the obligation by freeing a child born of fornication." Ibn Nawfal said: I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: "That I give a pair of sandals in the path of Allah is dearer to me than that I free a child born of fornication."
