Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: A man came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I saw in a dream a canopy from which ghee and honey were dripping. I saw people holding out their hands, some taking much and some little, and a rope was hanging from the sky to the earth. I saw that you (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the rope and climbed up. After you (peace and blessings be upon him), a second man took hold of the rope and climbed up. After him a third man took hold of the rope and climbed up. Then a fourth man took hold of the rope and it broke. Then it was joined again and he climbed up. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I will interpret this dream. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Interpret it." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The canopy means the canopy of Islam; the ghee and honey dripping from it mean the sweetness and softness of the Qur'an; and the people holding out their hands means acquiring more or less of the teaching of the Qur'an. The rope hanging from the sky to the earth means the truth upon which you (peace and blessings be upon him) stand. Because of it Allah granted you (peace and blessings be upon him) ascendancy and eminence. Then after you (peace and blessings be upon him) a second man took this truth, and Allah gave him ascendancy too. Then a third man also gained ascendancy through it. Then a fourth man tried to climb up and this rope broke. Then the rope was mended and he climbed up. O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you (peace and blessings be upon him); did I say it correctly or did I make a mistake? You (peace and blessings be upon him) should tell me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some right and some wrong." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! You must tell me my mistake. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not adjure (me)."
(b) In the hadith of al-Layth it says: O Messenger of Allah! I saw in a dream last night that a rope stretched from the earth to the sky. I saw that you took hold of it and climbed up.
