Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "When Allah sent Adam (peace be upon him) down to the earth, the angels said: 'O Allah! Will You place on it one who will cause corruption and shed blood on the earth, while we glorify Your praise and declare Your holiness?' Allah Almighty said: 'I know what you do not know.' [Surah al-Baqarah: 30] 'O our Lord! We are more obedient to You than the children of Adam.' Allah said: 'Bring two angels; we will send them down to the earth and see how they act.' They said: These are Harut and Marut. The two of them were sent down to the earth, and a beautiful woman appeared before them. The two of them began to ask her for herself, and she said: No, not until you say this word of shirk. They said: By Allah, we will never associate partners with Allah. So she left them, and then came back carrying a child. Again the two of them asked her for herself, and she said: By Allah, this will not happen until you two kill this child. They said: By Allah, we will never kill him. Then the woman came with a cup of wine. Again the two of them asked her for herself, and she said: By Allah, first drink the wine. The two of them drank the wine and became thoroughly drunk, and they committed both crimes: fornication with the woman and the killing of the child. When they recovered from their intoxication, the woman said: By Allah, in your drunken state you did the very thing you had refused me. At that point they were given the choice between the punishment of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter, and they chose the punishment of this world."
(b) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from Ka'b that the angels mentioned the deeds of the children of Adam, and then he narrated something similar.
Only Zuhayr bin Muhammad narrated it from Musa bin Jubayr from Nafi'; and this (the version from Ka'b) is more likely correct.
