أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا هَارُونُ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي الزَّرْقَاءِ، ثنا أَبِي، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ ⦗٥٢٢⦘ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ضَرَبَ ابْنًا لَهُ يُكَنَّى أَبَا عِيسَى، وَأَنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ تَكَنَّى بِأَبِي عِيسَى، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَمَا يَكْفِيكَ أَنْ تُكَنَّى بِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ؟ فَقَالَ: رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَنَّانِي. فَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدْمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ، وَإِنَّا فِي جَلِّيَتِنَا. فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُكَنَّى بِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ حَتَّى هَلَكَ.
Zayd bin Aslam narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) struck a son of his for taking the kunyah Abu Isa. Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) took the kunyah Abu Isa, so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Is it not enough for you to take the kunyah Abu Abdullah?" He replied: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me this kunyah." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The past and future sins of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were forgiven, whereas we are still in our state of uncertainty, not knowing what will become of us. Thereafter his kunyah remained Abu Abdullah until his death.
