Bayhaqi 18957 — Reports on an animal about to die that is slaughtered

Ata' bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) said that a man from Banu Harithah was grazing she-camels in one of the valleys of Uhud. One she-camel was about to die, but the man had nothing with which to slaughter it (nahr). He took a wooden peg and struck it into the upper part of its chest (labbah), so that its blood flowed. Then he informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) "gave permission to eat it."
