Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talhah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "(that) over which a name other than Allah's has been invoked" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 3], that it means what is dedicated in the name of idols. "Al-munkhaniqah" is an animal killed by strangling; "al-mawqudhah" is an animal killed by a blow with a piece of wood; "al-mutaraddiyah" is an animal that falls from a mountain and dies; "al-natihah" is a goat that dies from being gored by the horns of another goat; "and what a beast of prey has eaten" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 3] is what a beast of prey has mauled: if you caught it while its tail was still moving and its eye was still blinking, then slaughter it with the name of Allah, and it is lawful. In another place, the explanation of "except what you have slaughtered" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 3] is that animals in which life remains and which you slaughter are lawful; "and what is sacrificed on stone altars" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 3] is what was slaughtered at shrines and dedicated in their name; in another explanation it is said that these are idols. "And that you seek decisions by divining arrows" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 3] means arrows by which they sought to learn their fortune; "that is grave disobedience" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 3]: whoever eats anything of these animals, it is a sin.
