Juwayriyah bin Qudamah says: I performed Hajj and came to Madinah, and Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was delivering a sermon, saying: "I saw a rooster peck me once or twice." The narrator says: Only a week or so passed before he was wounded. Permission (to enter) was given first to the Companions, then to the people of Madinah, then to the people of Syria, then to the people of Iraq. I was among the last to enter. A black cloth had been bound over Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) wound, and blood was flowing. We asked him to give us his counsel, and he said: "As long as you follow the Book of Allah, you will not go astray. I counsel you regarding the Muhajirun, for people increase and decrease in number; I counsel you regarding the Ansar, for they are like a mountain pass of Islam in which refuge is taken; and I counsel you regarding the Bedouins, for they are your root," and on another occasion he said: "for they are your brothers and the enemies of your enemies. And I counsel you regarding the covenant of protection of Allah (the dhimmis), for they are the covenant of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the provision of your dependents." Then he said: "Rise and leave me."
