It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards Badr with the Companions. Suddenly a black slave of Banu al-Hajjaj, who was drawing water for Quraysh, came before them. The Companions seized him and began asking him: Where is Abu Sufyan? He said: By Allah, I have no knowledge, but these are the Quraysh, among whom are Abu Jahl, Utbah, Shaybah and Umayyah bin Khalaf. Whenever he said this, the Companions would beat him, and he would say: Leave me, leave me, I will tell you. When they let him go, he would (again) say: By Allah, I have no knowledge about Abu Sufyan, but these Quraysh are coming, among whom are Utbah, Shaybah and Umayyah bin Khalaf. They brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prayer, hearing these words. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul! When he told you the truth you beat him, and when he lied to you, you let him go. It is indeed Quraysh who are coming, so that they may protect Abu Sufyan from you." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is where so-and-so will fall," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on the ground and said: "This is the place where so-and-so will be killed, and this is where so-and-so will be killed." By Allah, not one of them moved even slightly away from the place (marked by) the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order concerning them, and they were seized by the feet, (dragged) and thrown into one of the wells of Badr.
